Swire conducts statutory inspections on an offshore windfarm substation

Posted 29 Oct 2020

Our customer approached us looking for an inspection and testing service solution for its offshore wind farm, located in the Barrow Irish Sea.

Challenge

The requirement included various MPI and visual inspections to be completed on the wind farm's transformer platform. Essential maintenance to both the lifeboat davit and the ladder systems used to access the wind farm was also carried out.

This was our first venture into the offshore wind sector, and the customer trusted that our 40+ years of experience in oil and gas would allow us to apply our knowledge and experience of the offshore environment to complete this project to a high standard.

Solution

We dispatched one of our skilled engineers to the wind farm to carry out the work required which included rescue davit modification, assembly, inspection and testing. The modification included stripping down the davit, modifying it and reassembling, all of which was conducted on the offshore platform.

The engineer also carried out an access ladder survey and MPI inspection.

In addition, a proof-load test and inspection was carried out, which included a series of bolt torqueing tests.

Following the survey, we produced a document which included a risk assessment and method statements. This included a detailed report on the engineer’s findings so the customer could assess the corrosion damage to the main access ladders. This was issued to the customer within four working days of completion.

Results

The inspection work was completed on time and the report we provided informed our customer of the condition of its equipment. This will result in significant savings on future repair work expenditure.

As a result of the activity conducted on the platform regarding the davit, the customer can continue to comply with regulations around essential lifesaving equipment.
